Major Investment Boosts UK Critical Digital Infrastructure

Global digital infrastructure leader Equinix has confirmed plans to invest approximately £3.9 billion (around $5.1 billion) into a new data centre campus in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom — one of the largest commitments to UK digital infrastructure to date. The development, on an 85-acre site near South Mimms, will deliver more than 250 MW of processing capacity across multiple facilities and is designed to serve as a cornerstone of the UK’s critical national infrastructure.

Once completed, the new campus will provide world-class digital capacity to support sectors ranging from healthcare and financial services to life sciences, manufacturing, and public services, connecting businesses of all sizes to secure, scalable computing resources. Construction is expected to generate around 2,500 jobs during the build phase and support 200+ permanent tech and operations roles once operational.

The scale and ambition of the project reflect strong confidence in the UK’s digital economy and its position as a hub for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing. Government officials have described the investment as a significant signal of national competitiveness, while industry bodies highlight the campus’s potential to support broader digital transformation and economic growth.

Equinix already operates and supports hundreds of customers in the UK, and the new Hertfordshire site will effectively double its data centre footprint in the country. The development is also designed with sustainability commitments in mind, including plans for 100 % renewable energy supply and strategies to deliver biodiversity net gains across the campus.
